Learning to highlight those features which make you unique can help boost your confidence in anything you create.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h2><b>Questions to Ask Yourself<\/b><b><\/b><\/h2><p>To understand your body shape better, simply look in the mirror and look at your features.\u00a0 Are your shoulders broad or narrower?\u00a0 Do you carry more weight in your shoulders, belly, or hips?\u00a0 Are your shoulders and hips equal in size?\u00a0 Which is wider: your shoulders, or your hips?<\/p><p>Finding these key characteristics can give you better insight to what body type you fit into.\u00a0 Once you have looked to find the unique features of your figure, you can use select from the 5 basic body types to determine your body type and help you select clothes and sewing patterns\u00a0that highlight your best features.<\/p><p>Demystifying Your Beauty&#8230; It&#8217;s important to remember that your body type does not define your beauty. Everyone has unique features that make them beautiful, and it&#8217;s important to celebrate those features. If not, enhance or draw the eye to a feature you&#8217;d rather have accentuated.<\/p><p>All we ask is that honor your body in this process and love whatever shape you are.\u00a0 Your body is your temple. It\u2019s a good thing to make it look its best and feel comfortable in the process.<\/p><h2>The 5 Shapes<\/h2><p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thesewingbuzz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-29-at-12.34.22-PM-300x168.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/p><p>There are 5 general shapes that you can find when looking at a woman\u2019s body.\u00a0 Each shape has its own unique features that set it apart from the others.\u00a0 Similarly, each shape presents its own difficulties when it comes to finding garments that fit and flatter the body.\u00a0 Which of the shapes below best describes your body?<\/p><p><b>The Pear Shape<\/b><b> <\/b>features a smaller upper body with a larger lower body.\u00a0 Typically, this means you will have a smaller bust, smaller waist, and larger, full hips and thighs.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thesewingbuzz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/pear.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"80\" height=\"265\" \/><\/p><p><b>The Triangle Shape<\/b> features more narrow shoulders and hips with bigger bust and waistlines.\u00a0 Your weight is carried towards the lower middle of your body.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thesewingbuzz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/triangleup.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"80\" height=\"268\" \/><\/p><p><b>The Rectangle<\/b> is commonly referred to as an athletic build.\u00a0 The rectangle shape has little definition at the waist with the shoulders and hips being almost the same width.\u00a0 It is not uncommon, though, to still find the hips and thighs to be slightly wider than the bust line.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thesewingbuzz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/rectangle.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"79\" height=\"265\" \/><\/p><p><strong>The Hourglass<\/strong> the shoulders and waist are the same width, with a significantly smaller waist.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thesewingbuzz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hourglass.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"80\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p><p><b>Inverted Triangle<\/b> narrower shoulders than hips with larger bustline and waistline.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thesewingbuzz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/triangle.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"79\" height=\"264\" \/><br \/><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">When deciding on a surface pattern for your fabric selection, consider how the surface pattern (design) will layout and appear in the final outcome of your garment.\u00a0 Position the fabric on the pattern pieces in a thoughtful manner as pertains to where the design will direct the eye.<\/span><\/p><p>Linear manipulation of the eye can be achieved in many ways.\u00a0 Among those are directional, proportional and negative\/positive space.<\/p><p>Think of line or texture within the fabric, surface pattern design (is it directional, plain, or patterned?)\u00a0 Where are these designs going to hit various parts of my body?\u00a0 Am I going to have a giant flower covering a large portion of the torso, if so, how will that keep the eye moving around.\u00a0 Is this floral design too big or too small?<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thesewingbuzz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-29-at-3.25.48-PM-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p><p>Ask yourself, can I use this fabric (on reverse side) on the edge of a seam to create (on purpose) directionality on the princess seam of jacket or dress?\u00a0 Could I place a trim on the seam to move the eye around?<\/p><p>Will making a ruffle hem stop the eye vertically and only move horizontally?\u00a0 Will it leave me looking shorter than I am?<\/p><figure style=\"width: 169px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Short Flamingo Skirt by Sewing Pattern Secrets\" src=\"http:\/\/thesewingbuzz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/flamingo-short-169x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Flamingo Skirt by Sewing Pattern Secrets\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Short Flamingo Skirt by Sewing Pattern Secrets<\/figcaption><\/figure><figure style=\"width: 169px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Flamingo Skirt by Sewing Pattern Secrets\" src=\"http:\/\/thesewingbuzz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Flamingo-Long-169x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flamingo Skirt by Sewing Pattern Secrets<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As in the examples above&#8230;\u00a0 Would it be better to let that ruffle flow diagonally, such as in a flamingo skirt, on a lightweight fabric to keep the eye moving and give it a sexy appeal, rather than a plain horizontal ruffle that will stop the eye at the calf and create stop point.\u00a0 That kind of ruffle would look as if you\u2019ve just come out of an 1800\u2019s prairie movie.<\/p><p>Feel free to ask yourself all kinds of questions when discovering what it is you want to make for yourself or others.<\/p><p>A horizontal line across the waist is what we usually see, but what if I added a visual focal point off -entered and slightly higher up?<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thesewingbuzz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-29-at-1.17.30-PM-300x164.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" \/><\/p><p><i>Above:\u00a0 This surface design direction points upwards toward the face and can make the bust look bigger.\u00a0 This line also follows the hips lower down, which may or may not be desirable.<\/i><\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/thesewingbuzz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-29-at-1.17.45-PM-300x172.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" \/><\/p><p><i>Above:\u00a0 Surface design points down and away from the face and seems to narrow the waist and accentuate\u00a0 the hips when duplicated down vertically.\u00a0 It follows the natural form of the figure.<\/i><\/p><p>More about color and other factors to consider in our next blog&#8230;.<br \/><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;
