āļø SPS The Summer Shift Dress: Chic Simplicity with a Clever Construction Twist
Square Neck. Signature Style. No Zipper Needed.
If you’re an intermediate sewist looking for your next wardrobe wināthis oneās for you. TheĀ Summer Shift DressĀ is your breezy, no-fastening-required option that flatters, flows, and fits with a touch of thoughtful structure.
āļø Style Meets Skill
At first glance, itās all effortless eleganceāa shift silhouette, square neckline, and your choice of sleeves or sleeveless finish. But donāt be fooled: this pattern is smartly engineered to help you pull off a trickier neckline with ease.
Instead of finicky bias binding, youāll use a shaped neckline facingĀ with a wide trim or fashion fabricĀ (think brocade, damask, or dobby). This not only elevates the styleāit gives the necklineĀ body and clean edges, and makes the square cut much more approachable for intermediates.

š Skill Level: Intermediate Sewists
This is not for absolute beginners, but itās a fantastic challenge for an intermediate looking to upgrade their skills. The includedĀ burrito roll techniqueĀ on the facing adds a couture-level finish.Ā We strongly suggestĀ reviewing the burrito roll tutorial firstāand for practice, try sewing it on a childās bodice or scrap fabric before diving into your main fabric.
ā Ā No zipper or button placket to worry about hereābut pay close attention to bust, waist, and hip measurements to ensure an easy pull-on fit.

šæ Fabric Suggestions:
For best results, chooseĀ stable, breathable woven fabricsĀ that press well and resist fraying.
Main Fabric (3.5ā6.5 oz/yd²):
- Linen (for experienced sewists)
- Linen blends, cotton chambray, bamboo-cotton, dobby, shirting, broadcloth,
- Handkerchief linen (delicate and elegant)
- Advanced only: Silks or 100% linen
- Stretch wovens allowed with up toĀ 3% elastane
Accent/Trim Fabric (Use neckline pattern piece):
- Brocade, Japanese brocade
- Damask, jacquard, herringbone, or dobby
- Must be similar in weight to the main fabric (no more than 2 oz heavier)
š” Pro Tips:
- Beginners: Skip the pure linen for nowāit frays easily and adds complexity. If you have fraying, pink first and then try bias bound seams if necessary on the hem.
- Avoid heavy trims that will overpower the neckline seams.
- Keep it polished with coordinating fabrics that behave similarly under the iron and at the machine.
This dress is perfect for summer brunches, casual weddings, beach vacations, or Sunday strolling. And with the square neck accent, it brings just the right touch of designer detailāwithout the designer price tag.
šĀ Ready to try the Summer Shift? Donāt forget to watch the burrito roll tutorial first and gather your favorite trim fabric to make this one your own.
š§µ What Is the Burrito Roll Technique?
Itās a method used toĀ enclose the raw edgesĀ of a neckline or sleeveless armhole by ārollingā the fabric like a burrito and sewing it from the inside.
You then pull the entire pieceĀ through a narrow openingājust like turning out a burritoāandĀ poof!Ā Youāre left with a beautifully clean edge.
Itās most commonly used inĀ sleeveless tops, dresses, and lined bodicesĀ where both the neckline and armholes are finished with a facing or lining.
šŖ” When Should You Use It?
Use the burrito roll method when:
- You want aĀ completely clean finishĀ (no visible topstitching or seam allowances)
- Youāre working withĀ lightweight to midweight fabricsĀ like cotton lawn, voile, rayon, or poly crepe
- Your project involvesĀ facings or full liningsĀ in a sleeveless design
š”Ā Itās especially ideal for fabrics that donāt press crisply or fray easily.
āļø How the Burrito Roll Works ā Step-by-Step (Simplified)
Hereās a basic overview of how this technique is done:
- Sew the Shoulder Seams
Join the main fabric and the facing or lining pieces at the shoulders. - Sew the Neckline
With right sides together, sew around the neckline to attach the facing or lining. - Roll Up the Back Bodice Like a Burrito
Start at one side seam and roll the back bodice tightly toward the opposite shoulder seam. - Enclose the Armhole
Bring the front and back facing pieces together over the burrito roll, right sides together. Sew the armhole closedĀ over the roll. - Turn It Right Side Out
Gently pull the burrito (a.k.a. the entire bodice) through the open shoulder seam or side seam and turn everything right-side out. - Finish Remaining Seams
Press everything flat, then close up the side seams using the āall-in-oneā method.
š Done! You now haveĀ completely clean armholes and necklineāall without any visible seams.

ā ļø Tips for Success
- Mark notches and shoulder seams carefully.Ā Itās easy to twist things during the roll.
- Press every seam as you go.Ā This helps keep the burrito neat and your corners crisp.
- Test the method on scrap fabric first.Ā The first time can feel confusingābut it clicks fast once you try it.
